Family Day Weekend - Wingfield Road, Stirling, Ontario

The beginning! FRIDAY we all drove up and met at the house! We were supposed to get together over the Christmas break but with Omicron raging our Christmas plans were cancelled. Fiona was devastated. In January when things started to settle down we made plans. Emily looked out for some airbnb's and found this fun place the next town over from where Ken grew up in Codrington.

We had a big dump of snow Thursday night into Friday, and so the last little bit of the drive was snowy and icy, but we all made it safely and the party began! The kids and dogs were all so excited to see each other! (Grown ups too!)

SATURDAY morning Ken made pancakes, eggs and bacon. It was kind of fun to see what the place actually looked like since we all got here in the dark. It was really cold and windy. Emily went to ski a little bit, but skiing in the driveway and in the road wasn't much fun. After her quick jaunt we walked up the road a bit with the dogs.

The kids played and had fun. John Inca tested out the record collection and played DJ.

Next up, Water Buffalo! John Inca made an appointment to go visit the Water Buffalo farm and Buff Stuff Store a few roads over in Stirling. The kids needed some cajoling, but in the end we all went and it was so fun! The calves were so adorable and so friendly!

Next up was Empire Cheese and the squeakiest cheese curd!
Then onto Campbellford. This is where Ken was born. This is also where the artist who designed the toonie was born. We went to pose by the toonie and the sun came out just before the kids were about to lose their minds. The wind was nasty cold.
I now need to find the pics from when Ken and I went twenty years ago...
Then it was back 'home'. Jinx and Emily did some skiing in the field next store (with permission from the owners), and there was play, play, play and hanging out. And a lemon meringue pie.

SUNDAY
morning, Ken said he would go for a walk up the road with me. And  I thought we were going to go, but then Ken disappeared, so I got ready and grabbed the dog, but the dog wouldn't leave the driveway. So I went back to the house only to find Ken ready to go, and he suggested we just leave without the dog. Which we did, only to start walking a little bit up the road and the dog came bounding up behind us. Milo had watched us walk away, barked to be let out of the house, and bounded up the driveway much to everyone's horror - Alice and Jinx came chasing after him and Jinx had the leash so we kept walking, with the dog!

We let the kids pick between ZOOM church and home church and they chose home church. Emily and I each shared a little bit of Come Follow Me, Holden, Alice, Fiona and Hazel bore their testimonies, Hazel and Fiona sang Follow the Prophet, and Kate and Lauren said prayers. The dogs cuddled on the floor behind us while we sat around the table for our church service.
Then it was back to play and hanging out.

Emily took Alice out for a cross country skiing jaunt. Alice loved it!

Ken suggested going to see a suspension bridge that crossed the Trent River. None of the kids wanted to come with us so we had a grown up outing with the dogs.

When we got back Emily got all of the kids outside, and the fort building began! Holden built his fort up the hill beside the house. Hazel and Fiona in front of the house at the top of the slope. Kate had her kingdom against the fence at the bottom of the hill, and just around the corner along the other side of the house was the domain of Alice and Lauren.

Then it was a dinner of pasta, cheese sauce, veg, chicken strips and "would you rather?".

Then it was birthday celebrations one day early! Alice was born 11 years ago tomorrow on Family Day! And tomorrow is Family Day again! YAY! It was fun to have an early birthday with the Lim-Andersons!

Emily got some amazing pastels and pastel drawing paper for Alice. And we gave her the t-shirt she requested.

Then it was a spontaneous dance party and a big game of Cards Against Humanity family edition.

And then before we knew it, MONDAY was upon us, and it was time to tidy up and go. Emily and I took the dogs for a walk, and then men began to clean and get the kids to pack and get organized.

Emily gave Alice a quick lesson in shading with her new pastel chalk.

And then it was goodbye. We took - or rather, tried to take a group shot. I call it  the "this is what you get when you force sleep deprived children to take a photo" photo.

Milo was not interested in getting in the car poor little guy! He still doesn't travel well (he gets car sick - we didn't feed him before we left, and thankfully, he wasn't sick on the way home like he was on the way there!)
We drove through Campbellford and Codrington again on the way home. We drove past the hospital in Campbellford where Ken was born, and we drove past the three homes that Ken lived in. I didn't take pics of the second home, or the third home - I think I have other pics of both, but I did take a pic of the farm and house that he lived in when he was born. I don't remember him showing me this house before - although he might have!
We all had a wonderful Family Day long weekend away with friends. Possibly Milo had the most fun! He loved the huge yard and his buddy Bella! We're so thankful for good friends!

Prairie Oysters

While visiting the Buff Stuff Store, John Inca decided that he needed to try Prairie Oysters. Holden, Hazel and Fiona sang a song about it on their drive home "We Don't Talk About Testicles" to the tune of "We Don't Talk About Bruno".

They were frozen solid, so they needed to defrost over night.

Today for lunch John Inca had a prairie oyster sandwich. He took the membrane off. He parboiled them, breaded them and fried them with garlic and onion.

Emily and Ken were the only ones brave enough to try them. Their faces speak for themselves!

John Inca was happy with his culinary efforts.

Laundry Promptings

Prompting #1

I can't remember exactly when this took place. At some point last year I took a pair of pants of Ken's to launder and although I usually always check the pockets carefully, I wasn't careful. I felt distinctly impressed that I should remove the pants from the washing machine and carefully check the pockets. I didn't. I was holding something that I didn't want to put down, and I sort of checked the pockets. I think I checked the same pocket twice.

When it was time to put the laundry in the dryer I realized that Ken's fairly new and quite expensive ear buds had been washed. I felt so so dumb. So frustrated that I had ignored the prompting.

Everyone has learned from this story - my family and my ward family lol. Alice quoted the story in her talk during the primary presentation.

Prompting #2

Today when I was doing laundry, I was putting Kate's clothes in the washing machine. There was a lot of space left and I thought oh maybe I should add Alice's, but I don't like to wash their clothing together because I end up mixing up their things. But I felt prompted that I should add Alice's clothing. I started to say no to the prompting, but then I changed my mind.

As I added Alice's clothing to the washing machine I realized that almost half of her laundry basket was filled with clean folded clothing from last week. If I hadn't followed the prompting I wouldn't have finished the laundry tonight, and Alice's load of clothing would have been tiny and a huge waste of resources.

It felt like such a dumb prompting in the moment, but when I stopped to think about it, I felt deeply of my Heavenly Father's love for me. He cares about what I care about. There are so many tender mercies around us, we are so loved. Our Savior is ready to carry our burdens - like doing one less load of laundry, if we listen.

I still miss promptings - like this past week. I had put my shoes beside my boots on Tuesday night, but the voice said "put them in your car", however I said no because I didn't want to go into the cold garage. On Wednesday morning I forgot the shoes and had to wear my boots all day long! I should have listened to the voice! When I got home on Wednesday, I put the shoes in the car straight away!

It's silly/funny when I miss the little warnings and promptings - well, not so much when it costs a few hundred dollars, but I just hope that I keep learning how to listen, so that I don't miss things that really matter! I'm so grateful for the whisperings of the Holy Ghost.

One last thought on this. Years ago when Ken and I were in Don Valley Ward I was in a Relief Society lesson and the subject of listening to promptings came up. Melissa Wilson said something to the effect of "sometimes we worry about where the idea comes from, if it's a good idea, who cares where the idea comes from, just do it". I've thought about that a lot, and it's helped me to just listen and do instead of question. If it's good, just do it! The Book of Mormon says over and over again, all good things come from God. Whether we recognize God's hand or not, is up to us.

The Birthday Man

 KEN!

In person dining hasn't reopened. Museums, movie theatres and other fun indoor things are all still closed. The celebration of Ken's 43rd year was quiet and unexciting. The girls had a P.A. Day from school on Friday, so they made cards and cleaned the basement - their birthday surprise for their Dad. I bought Ken a floor mat and a gravy boat - epic right?! We had our Saturday morning walk. We breakfasted, lunched, watched some tv, made a grocery list, did some shopping, had take-out for dinner (McDonald's for Kate and Fiona, and Pita Land for Ken, Wendy and Alice) and then we watched Raya and the Last Dragon as a family. It was quiet but good. My only regret is not taking a pic of Ken and the girls!

Happy Birthday my love! You are so cherished!

A Teenager!

I think a Saturday birthday is perfect! It's like a gift in itself! We're in another kind of partial lockdown, (pandemic birthday #2) but the temple is open! We had an early start to the day, presents, breakfast, get ready and go!

We dropped off Alice and Fiona at the Penney's house and picked up Hannah and made our way to Brampton. Kate brought names that I had entered into familysearch from a family tree that was shared with me on ancestry.

Kate wanted Blizzards and french fries for lunch, so that's what we had - super healthy (definitely not) but very teenager appropriate!

Doug - her Sunday School teacher, and Nicole his wife and Kate's YW's president came by with a present. They kept their distance as they are both recovering from covid.

Kate requested a volcano cake - which Ken happily made for her. Ken made fondant and we each made our own dinosaur!
The lamest 1 and 3 ever, but it did the job?!

Uncle Andrew came over at some point in the afternoon and had take-out Boston Pizza dinner (since indoor dining is closed) with us and hung out for a bit. (Ken's almost finished his puzzle!)

As it is with all my kids birthdays, whenever they actually have the birthday it doesn't feel shocking because we've spent so much time anticipating the event! It just makes sense that Kate is 13 - she should be a teenager now. I've noticed a change in Kate the last few months, a settling, a maturing. I love my Katie-girl so very very much. I'm so happy that she was happy to go do baptisms at the temple on her birthday - and I'm so grateful that we could take her. I hope she had a great day today, and I hope that she knows how much she is loved!

Happy New Year

The first picture of the year... It's a magical fairy door - or at least a rock that's been painted to look like a magical fairy door. I took the picture on our walk this morning.

Picture number two... Me and my Ken. Coincidentally (or probably not) this was also the second pic of last year - me and Ken. I like my Ken! So much!

The first day of the year... a walk, we took down lights, got our covid boosters, had a lunch date, and now I'm blogging, Ken's doing a puzzle and the kids are doing various screen things, with non-screen things between. Is this a quiet start to another quiet-ish year? Is this the start to who knows what? I'm going with who knows what! I have no idea what 2022 will bring, but I'm grateful for my life and I'm hopeful that there will be more good than bad, more hope than pessimism, more love and joy than sorrow and pain!
