To say that Alice loves makeup is an understatement. For Christmas 2016 one of the only things that she wanted was makeup. She was five. She was given makeup with the restriction that she couldn't wear it to school or church, she could wear it on weekends - she could play with it basically. For her birthday this year she decided that she wanted a spa party. One of the young women from church Christie actually works at a place that does parties - complete with robes, manicures and pedicures. I didn't tell Alice that, but I did suggest that maybe Christie could come to our house and do nails, and that's just what we did.
Alice wanted a lipstick pinata. Ken and I talked about different construction ideas. Mostly I wanted something I could actually do. I think it turned out pretty well.
Last Sunday I chatted with Christie and she offered her two cents about the order of events in the party and it made sense, so we started off with the pinata. It held up just long enough for everyone to get a turn and for Alice to finish it off.
Fiona had a very hard time with the pinata. She wanted to go second - was handed the bashing stick and walked up to the pinata and crumpled in a heap. The kids chanted her name, but this was not helpful and she began to sob... for the first time. She sat beside her Dad, and clearly the pictures documented that the kids were able to smack apart the pinata. It ended well!
Next up was pin the face on the face - I can't remember what Alice's original idea was but I suggested doing the whole face and she said sure. So we decided on 11 different parts - one for each party attendee and we found what we needed - I love the internet! It was pretty cute. Alice went first and then Fiona second. Fiona pinned her earring above and to the left of the face. No one was laughing at her, but that didn't matter, she again dissolved into sobs.
At the end there were a few girls still watching and I asked them if they wanted to rearrange the face and they really wanted to, so they did. Alice really wanted the hair to have pig tails, she made the hair, and it's pretty awesome.
Next up was lunch. We had pizza, popcorn, doritos, lemonade and fruit. I didn't actually take any pictures of the girls eating lunch. After lunch we cleaned up as quickly as we could and Christie and I started the facials. Leanne and Fiona had no desire for a mud mask facial, but the rest of the girls did.
After Christie and I had finished applying the last of the masks, we then proceeded to take them off while Alice opened presents. Alice was a very happy girl!
From Izzie she got a sparkly hedgehog.
Leanne gave her a kit to make lockets.
Destiny gave her a Shoppie (a Shopkin doll)
Adelyn gave her a make your own pillow, a beanie boo, starburst, a notepad and pens.
Scarlett gave Alice a dress, and a bracelet making kit.
Hazel and Lauren gave Alice a tulip bulb and lots and lots of plasticine.
Alyssa gave Alice a kitty back pack, kitty cat ear headband and little socks.
After the presents, the cake!! Alice asked for a fondant cake to look like a blush container. So that's what Ken made. He'd never made fondant before, but he was up for the challenge.
If Ken ever makes black fondant again, he'll wear gloves!
The cake was excellent, looked great and tasted great! And, there was really only one piece left over, so thankfully the cake is all gone!
After the cake Christie did nails, and even though we started late, it worked out really well. The Moms all came in the right order - only two moms had to wait, and not that long, and it all just worked out! The girls all had a really fun time, there was lots of screaming (the good kind), and laughing and giggling, and Fiona did stop crying! Alice was very properly celebrated!!
One final funny note, Holden. Alice invited Lauren, Hazel, and Holden, but we wrote a note for Holden on the invitation letting him know that we wouldn't be offended in the least if Holden wanted to take a pass on the spa party. A pass he did take, but he did pop in for a visit with Kate when he and John Inca came to pick up his sisters.
