Ken and the BIG 4-0

I can't remember how many months ago - not that many - it occurred to me that this next birthday was a big one for Ken! He made it very clear that he didn't want any sort of party, so we didn't do that!

His birthday landed on a Tuesday (same as Kate's) and that meant a swimming lesson. I was going to make our usual, spaghetti and meatballs, but we had forgotten to buy sauce, so Ken had to buy himself dinner on the way home from work!

On the way home from swimming we went to Tim Horton's to pick up a Boston cream donut for his "happy birthday" donut, but after going to two Tim's, we came up empty. Settling for second best, we picked up an apple fritter donut.

The girls were excited to sing to Daddy and everyone enjoyed their donut!

It was a thrilling day indeed!

Saturday though, dinner with friends, now that would be awesome!!! Ken had made reservations at a BBQ place he'd been dreaming about for months, we invited the Lim-Andersons, we had a babysitter, all was well!

Last minute, Ken decided he didn't want BBQ, so we changed the reservations to Jatujak, a Thai restaurant. We had a fun dinner, Ken got a most awesome gift - a cap, and the night seemed pretty perfect, until the drive home...

On the way home Ken went from not feeling well, to feeling like he was dying. We got home, I drove our babysitter home and came back to a sad Kate and a calmer Ken. Kate got freaked out because Ken was loudly in pain. I diagnosed a gallbladder attack, and Ken was welcomed into his forties!

Here's to hoping that this isn't a forecast for how fun his forties will be! Welcome to the club Ken, it's a pretty good club most of the time!

Kate's 10th Birthday Party

We were very late planning this, we didn't talk about it until the winter break was almost done. Kate decided that she wanted an arctic theme and that she wanted to go tobogganing. We made the invitations and then Kate and I drove around handing them out to almost everyone. There was one school friend that we didn't know outside of school.

We decided that we would do art if there was no snow. And well. it's good that we had a back-up planned, because there was no snow. When we were thinking about the party and planning, it was two days before we were supposed to receive a heavy snowfall - but the snow never came.

Last night we went out and bought art supplies and party supplies. We bought paint, brushes, canvas and ingredients for slime and stress balls.

The girls all had lots of fun painting.

After the painting we made slime. I meant to buy shaving foam and we were going to make puffy slime - but I bought shaving gel. Oops! Regular slime it was. The girls had fun playing with it. And almost all of them took some home.

After the slime it was pizza time. They had pizza, chips, veggies and root beer.

After lunch, I texted all the mommies to ask them to come half an hour later, and the girls played. Then they opened presents, had cupcakes and played some more.

Kate is now in her room with Fiona, happily playing with her new  Playmobil. I think everyone had fun. Happy birthday Kate!

Kate's Birthday Fun

On Tuesday the 8th Kate turned TEN!! We had her favourite dinner (homemade mac and chesse),  Ken came home early, and we all went to the first day of swimming lessons.

Then we came home and had buttermilk cupcakes with buttercream icing. Thank you chef Ken!

Wednesday Kate and Alice went to activity days. Alice went for the first time. They had fun making little creatures and learning some of the articles of faith.

Friday night was birthday celebrating with Grandma. Kate really wanted to go to Montana's so we did. Kate loved her pasta alfredo, but most of all, she loved wearing the moose hat!

Kate: I wore the moose hat, it was heavy, I couldn't see a thing and Grandma had to dodge the antlers, but it was worth it!

Her party is tomorrow, and then Kate's birthday fun will be done! Well, except that she still needs to spend her birthday money. Kind of fun when birthdays last a while.

We love you Kate. We're proud of who you are, and who you're becoming. You are interesting, smart, funny, helpful, and fun to  be around. I'm so glad that I get to be your Mom! Happy birthday!
