Stewart Irvine - Memorial Service
My Mom messaged me on December 28th to tell me that Stewart had passed away that afternoon. Two and a half years ago his family prepared for his passing, but then his wife Ruth told him that he wasn't allowed to die, so he didn't.
When I think of Steward Irvine, Bro. Irvine, I think of a kind, good, hard working man. He was always there at all church functions, serving with a smile. My fondest memory of him was as my chorister in primary. I'm not sure if it was my last year, or last two years in primary (10/11 years of age) but he was there leading the music every week. I remember doing Mary's Lullaby at Christmas time, it's become one of my favourite Christmas songs in the children's song book.
Today Monique spoke first. Monique is two years older than me, and we were in young women's together. She read a letter she had written to her Dad the week before he died. It was really sweet.
Then Bro. Black spoke about his many memories. Stewart was one of his counselors when he was the bishop. He spoke about Robbie Burns' nights, his singing, his performing, his scouting, camp trips.
Bro. MacDonald spoke next, and recounted many of the same ideas, camping, scouting, Robbie Burns, singing, performing. But he also spoke about Steward being a father figure to him, and a grandparent of sorts to his kid. He was someone they could count on in their lives, for things they needed, and for fun!
It was funny, that so many of the stories were about camping, but it came out that Stewart didn't actually like camping!
Then it was his son David's turn to speak. David shared parts of his life history that Steward had written - at least up until 2001.
He was born in Scotland in 1935 - he had two brothers, Jackie and Eric. Jackie was 13 years older and served in WW2 and they had a map and they would mark where their brother was. Stewart didn't love school and finished school at 15.
He met Ruth and fell in love with her when they were 18. They met at some club that he was part of that involved dirt bikes. I can't remember when they were married. But Stewart had been called into military service and was given 72 hours leave to go and get married. Stewart served in Cyprus. I think in all he served for eighteen months before he was able to come home to his wife and really start their life together. He was a badminton champion in his regiment.
At some point he got a new job and they moved to a place called Carlisle and because there was a delay in the construction of their apartment, they were living in a house when the missionaries came and knocked on their door. They joined the church in Carlisle three weeks later. They were sealed in the London temple around a year later, and the two missionaries that baptized them were able to come.
They had a blessing a year or so later because children weren't coming, but then as David phrased it, that first best thing to happen happened in 1964(?) I think, David was born. Then the second best thing in 1968 Howard was born. On January 11, 1969 they moved to Canada, and lived with Stewart's brother Eric and his family for three weeks while they got settled. Then the third best thing, Monique was born in 1971.
Stewart worked in construction first. Then he was a building inspector for the city of Toronto for a short time, then he was an employee of CIBC as a building inspector and he traveled all over Ontario.
He talked about some of his callings. He talked about the opportunity they had in 2002 to serve a mission. They were called and served for eighteen months in Australia.
And then I had to leave! I feel badly that today was a busier day than I thought it was going to be. I'm grateful that Stewart Irvine was part of my life. I'm grateful to have known this kind, honest, good man. He was funny and full of life and I'm thankful for the positive influence he had in my life.

Kate's Birthday Dinner
Kate wanted to go to Montana's like we did last year, so we did! Mom and Andrew were able to come so that was great. We had a fun dinner. Everyone liked their meal and everyone behaved. And Kate got to wear the moose antlers, so it was a success!
Before we left, Kate and I recreated a baby picture.
The birthday fun will continue on Sunday - Ken promised to make her favourite dinner, and he promised to make her a minecraft birthday cake. Then it will continue next weekend as well, when we have Kate's birthday party. We love you Kate!

Kate - Faith in God
When Kate turned eight she was given a Faith in God for girls booklet. In it were areas for her to set goals - Learning and Living the Gospel, Serving Others, and Developing Talents. She was to complete two goals in each area each year, memorize the articles of faith, write out her testimony as well as keep the basic requirements (pray, read scriptures, keep the commandments, honour your parents and be kind to your family, pay tithing and attend tithing settlement, and attend sacrament meetings and primary regularly)
Sis. Yates and Sis. Penney encouraged Kate to complete the Faith In God goals to get her medallion as this program is now finished. A few months ago a new starter booklet was handed out to all the kids eight and up. All the youth are now being advised to set one goal a year in four different areas - Intellectual, Physical, Social and Spiritual.
Kate was very disheartened when they started talking about a new program. She and her Mama don't always appreciate change! I don't know if we talked enough about this. I do however think that Kate being able to finish off the old program was really great!
Kate was really excited to have her certificate presented to her in church today. Bro. Penney gave her the certificate and necklace in front of the whole congregation. Kate was thrilled.
This is her testimony that she wrote down in her Faith in God booklet: I know that the church is true. I believe in Jesus Christ and I know that he suffered and died for us and that we can repent for our sins and be forgiven. I believe in my Heavenly Father and Mother and that they love me. I believe in all the prophet says, and in the Book of Mormon and the Bible. I have experienced the comforting power of the Holy Ghost and it has helped me on my path to grow. I know that the word of wisdom is the right way to live. This church has helped me so much in this life and I will continue to profit from what I've learned in the next. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
I pray Kate, that you continue to grow your testimony every day, that you cling to what you know. I'm grateful for the experiences that you've had already in your young life - the many experiences that you've had that have grown your testimony! You are so loved, by both your earthly parents and your heavenly parents!

A Saturday
The last Saturday of the break could have been any Saturday. We had a productive morning. Kate finished the last few requirements for her Faith In God. We took down the Christmas tree and put everything away. Ken did the grocery shopping. And then we went to the ROM.
I was sad that we never made it to see the windows at the Bay or the downtown lights, but the lights on Cumberland near the Bay subway station were pretty too.
We went out for dinner and then went home.
I love doing stuff as a family, going on outings, learning and exploring together. I know as the girls get older it will get more difficult to have our schedules align, so I'm grateful for this time we have now.

The Temple
I'm grateful to my Mama who offers to watch the girls so we can go to the temple. I make Ken take a selfie every time we go. This is my way of "counting" our trips. We went to the temple five times last year, not quite every other month, but almost! I love going to the temple with my sweetheart. I'm grateful.
The First Week of January (second week of winter break)
The kids played. Lots of Netflix, YouTube and Disney Plus was watched. No one did too much at first. On New Years Day we went to see the last Star Wars movie: The Rise of Skywalker. I don't know if I loved watching it with the kids, but we watched it, and the girls, having watched all previous EIGHT movies with Ken in the previous two weeks did enjoy it, I think!
On Thursday Kate went to a course run by the Canadian Red Cross - Home Alone. She learned about taking care of herself when she's home alone. She had a good day. Alice, Fiona and I did a bunch of errands. The girls got paid all of the accumulated allowance money, and then Kate and I went to the bank and Kate got her very first bank card (after dinner). Before dinner we went for a bit of a walk, because goodness we've all been inside too much! Here's to hoping the next little while will be healthy!
On Friday Ken worked from home so we could leave after his 1 pm meeting. (We went to my Mom's, we went swimming, then Ken and I went to the temple.) On Friday morning I took the girls to the bank - Kate now has a Youth savings account, not just a savings account (oops), we went to Homesense where I bought two new pillows for the living room upstairs. AND then we went to Michael's. Alice and Fiona happily bought squishy pillows and beanie boos with their allowance money. Kate bought a beanie boo too - and she used her debit card - it was really cute! I should have taken a picture. We also booked Alice's birthday party at Michael's for February 22nd.
And just like that it's back to real life... or is this real life?!
