January Wrap-up

Oh my goodness what a long month. Good things - the birthdays and family fun. Bad things - online school. The girls have had so many ups and downs the past few weeks. Kate hates online school. Fiona doesn't hate it, but gets next to nothing out of it. Alice... I'm never sure. It seems like she's okay, but then she melts down. I've been okay teaching online, but the prep never ends. During the day I'm at home, so when I should be doing my prep, during my preps - I'm cooking, or cleaning, or helping my girls through their class work or their emotions, so then I'm up late every night prepping for the next day. That means I'm exhausted pretty much all the time and that's hard. The upside - we're together, Ken and I are employed, we're healthy, and we have enough tech for everyone to work at home!

The school set-up in the beginning. This didn't last. Eventually Kate went up to our room, Alice and Fiona were in the living room/dining room and I camped out in the basement. I think I've only been interrupted by crying Fiona twice. The girls have interrupted my classes a few times - but not too bad!

We've had some fun outside time, and it's been pretty mild, so that's a blessing.

We've even met up with friends outside.

Paradise Park with the Jenners.

And going past Sophia's house.

We still don't know when we're back to school, but hopefully soon. The numbers have come down from their peak of 3000 cases/day to now about 1000/cases a day.

The Birthday Boy

A birthday in two parts. Part one - Friday, his actual birthday. The girls each picked something out for Ken. Kate bought oil so he could season his charcuterie board. I had my friend Kay make a 42 - life meaning, the universe and everything shirt. Alice got Ken lemonade flavour to go with his soda stream and Fiona picked out coffee crisp bites, tic tacs and gum. Alice set up the basement and Ken opened his gifts before we started school/work for the day.

Kate picked out the birthday boy badge, and the birthday boy wore it all day. It was Friday and it was a long week, and Ken picked kabobs for dinner. (Alice had kabob too, but Kate and Fiona had subway.) And we watched Shazam as a family after dinner.

Part two. On Saturday Ken got to have a nap after getting up early with the girls
On Friday Ken didn't want a cake, but he decided today that he wanted to go see what they had a Metro in the gluten free section. We picked up a caramel crunch cake which is a gluten free meringue and so so good.

We love you Ken. You are our everything! Our meaning of life. Our universe. We're all so glad you were born!

Kate's Lockdown Birthday

Planning a birthday party is stressful, but not getting to plan a birthday party because you're living through a global pandemic and your province is in lockdown, that's stressful too. The roller coaster of light and dark, happy and sad, it's been really tough some days. I really wanted to make Kate's day special!

Ken and Kate took off on her birthday eve to Scarborough to pick up another laptop computer - curbside pick up of course - computer stores are closed. And I took the opportunity to do some shopping too. Alice, Fiona and I went and did a curbside pickup at Mastermind, and we went to Rexall - a pharmacy which is allowed to be open, to pick up more presents and party supplies. I was so so happy with the way it all came together.

The set up that greeted her in the morning!

Opening presents from sisters.

Pancakes for breakfast.

I think the kinetic sand that Alice picked out was Kate's favourite!
Kate's YW President Nicole Elliot stopped by with a bag of goodies.

Opening Mommy and Daddy's card - and the other present.

Opening Grandma's card.

This is 12!

Mom and CJ came over and we went for a walk by our house. It was cold but bright. It was a little icy but CJ made sure Mom stayed upright.

Happy Birthday to our Katie-Girl. We love you so much. Our family wouldn't be complete without you. You are exactly where you are meant to be, learning exactly what you are meant to learn. We love your humour and your quick wit. We love your willingness to help. We love it when you play sweetly with your younger sisters. We love learning with you, reading books with you, watching movies too. I love it when I catch you singing to yourself, because I love hearing your pure sweet voice. Welcome to 12, it's a pretty awesome place to be!

The Cake

This year Kate picked an Among Us themed birthday cake. Among Us is an online game where crewmates have to do tasks while the imposter is trying to sabotage the crewmates and kill them. The crew mates all the while are trying to figure out who the imposter is and stop him or her. It is a hugely popular game right now amongst children grades 3-6.

Ken did an awesome job recreating one of the cakes he found online. Kate's favourite colour is yellow and she loves the birds' nest with eggs accessory. The crewmate on the cake is unfortunately dead. It amused me that there was only one dead crewmate on the cake.
